It's a thriller right out of today's headlines, though it took place in the early nineties.
The theft of Soviet nerve gas weapons as the Cold War ends and the fate of a Special Operations helicopter mission to Iran set the stage for a thrill ride across continents as international chicanery gone wild seeks to restore dictatorial rule in the former Soviet republics. Can a disgraced Air Force colonel, a Belarus investigator framed for murder, and a spymaster suddenly left in the cold stop a disaster that will paralyze Washington?
Overture to Disaster Post Cold War Political Thriller Trilogy Book 3 eBook Chester D Campbell
As political and spy type thrillers go, this had a lot going for it early on. A very believable story line starts out with Soviet era big wigs who do not like the new order plotting to return things to the way it was. Part of their plan involves stealing chemical and nerve agents from the Russian Army. The first part of the book read quite well, but as it went on it got more and more implausible.
Toward the end it was almost a chore to read it was so implausible.
I like conspiracy thrillers, but I have to believe that at least at some level it is possible, even if it really can't be. This one started out quite good but just plain lost me along the way.

Overture to Disaster Post Cold War Political Thriller Trilogy Book 3 eBook Chester D Campbell Reviews
This was a gift and the recipient loved it.
An excellent and inciteful glimpse into the workings of old Soviet empire, and the inter-relationship with the breakaways. Apart from simply being a great and fast paced story, the author presents a compelling case for understanding how fragile Eastern Europe is under Putins ever increasing rule. You will love this read.
An excellent book covering a possible ideology regarding what could have happened after the Cold War. The reading was easy, characters were quite developed, and I would definitely read it again.
Very enthralling, will keep you interested throughout the book. Characters are well developed and the events are scarraly possible in this day.
Enjoyable, but a bit of a stretch of the imagination. Moles in our intelligence and legal organizations have existed and star chambers may be believable, but this story takes both factors to an extreme. The action was well done and the characters also well done, but the basic thesis
that the attack would generate a situation that the old guard could take advantage of is a bit much. Over all, a good story, but that's all.
This story takes place in the U.S., Mexico and parts of Europe. Going back and forth between those countries, the story develops into an international plot to destroy the new states that were pert of the old Soviet Union. A plot to destabilize the U.S. From helping them emerges with a chemical attack on a large gathering for July 4th. Several true patriots thwart the attack and kill those would destroy us. A lot of people are killed in the attack, but a real disaster has been avoided. I really liked this story, quite different than some I have read.
Two scapegoats on either side of the Atlantic team up to beat the odds and save Innocent humans from a horrible act of terror while seeking redemption for themselves. There is appreciable irony in that the paranoia of the Cold War survives into the post Cold War era. Nothing really changes for those coming of age and gaining wisdom during this time period except that the victims of the blame game and the doublecross become younger.
The author could use more memorable surnames to keep the reader apprised of the action, a la John le Carre, who most of the time picks outstanding names for his characters. Also, the novel would gain depth if there were greater use of spycraft techniques such as agent exchanges and "retraining" instead of blunt extermination.
Am all admiration for the author's experience and sympathy for the underdog, in spite of advanced years!
